Keep Drama off the Roads is back! We’re asking you to get involved and help us address the issue of dangerous driving among our young people.
Setanta Insurance and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have teamed up again to ask young people aged between 15 and 25 to help us raise awareness of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving by scripting a short film addressing the issue.
We are also delighted to announce that Keith McErlean, Road Safety Ambassador and currently starring in the RTÉ series Raw, has joined us to highlight the issue of road safety and will be helping to judge the competition.
Did you know that 17-24 year olds are a major risk group on Irish roads, being three times more likely to be killed in a collision than the rest of the population? This increases to five times more likely for 17 to 24 year old male drivers. Driver distraction plays a role in 20-30% of all road collisions and mobile phones are seen as a big contributor to this when considering the behaviour of younger drivers.
In fact, drivers are 4 times more likely to be involved in a collision if they use a mobile phone when driving. Texting while driving is even more dangerous than a mobile conversation as drivers spend up to 400% more time with their eyes off the road.
Based on this evidence, the theme of this year’s competition is ‘Mobile Phones and Driving’, specifically ‘Texting and Driving’.
As well as winning €3,000, the competition winner will also be involved in the process of getting their film script made into a short film which may be used to promote road safety. There will also be three runner-up prizes of €500.
